Mazu

Mazu originated in Fujian Province, China, where historical records indicate she was a real shamaness or fisherwoman later deified. Her worship eventually spread to coastal communities across East and Southeast Asia.

Mazu's deep-rooted cultural significance was internationally recognized when her worship and customs were inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2009. This highlighted the widespread impact of her pilgrimages and festivals across maritime communities.

Mazu is usually depicted wearing a red robe and sitting on a throne, often flanked by her two demon-subjugating assistants, Qianliyan and Shunfeng'er. These two assistants are known for their abilities to see and hear things from thousands of miles away to protect sailors.

According to legend, Mazu protected sailors from storms, sea monsters, and shipwrecks, which is why she is revered as the Empress of Heaven. Her statues are frequently placed in coastal temples to bless and guide maritime travelers.
