Originally founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1887, the site served as the primary seat of the Ethiopian government and royal residence for decades. The compound encompasses several historic buildings, banquet halls, and the burial site of Emperor Menelik II. In 2019, sections of the palace grounds were opened to the public as part of Unity Park, allowing tourists and citizens to explore the nation's imperial history.
