Mental Ray

description Mental Ray Overview

Mental Ray is a powerful, industry-standard rendering engine integrated into Autodesk Maya. It’s notable for its highly accurate, physically based simulations of light and materials, producing photorealistic results. Primarily used by professional visual effects artists and production studios working in film and animation, it leverages NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate complex scenes.

help Mental Ray FAQ

Can Mental Ray still be used in current versions of Maya?

Not as a current, supported Maya renderer. Autodesk separated Mental Ray from Maya beginning with Maya 2017, and NVIDIA stopped offering new Mental Ray subscriptions later in 2017.

What should replace Mental Ray in an old Maya project?

Arnold is Maya's current built-in production renderer and is the most direct supported destination. Materials such as Mental Ray's mia_material_x may need to be rebuilt rather than merely switching the render menu.

Why does an old Maya scene report that the mentalRay renderer is unavailable?

The scene references a renderer or shader plug-in that is not installed in the newer Maya environment. Opening the file can preserve the geometry and animation, but Mental Ray materials, lights, and render settings may not translate automatically.

Was Mental Ray made by Autodesk?

No. It originated at Mental Images, which NVIDIA acquired in 2007, although Autodesk bundled it with products including Maya and 3ds Max for many years.
