description Mepkin Abbey Overview
Mepkin Abbey is a Trappist (Cistercian) monastery located in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, along the Cooper River. Founded in 1949 by monks from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, the monastery occupies the site of the former Mepkin Plantation, which was donated by Henry and Clare Boothe Luce. The community follows the Rule of Saint Benedict and supports itself partly through mushroom cultivation and a composting operation. The grounds are open to visitors and offer retreat accommodations.
