Merrill Singer

Syndemic theory, developed by Merrill Singer in the 1990s, describes how multiple diseases or health conditions interact synergistically within a population, with the combined impact being greater than the sum of individual effects. Singer originally articulated the concept through his research on the clustering of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and violence in marginalized urban communities. The framework emphasizes that social and economic conditions, not biology alone, drive these disease interactions.

Singer developed the syndemic framework based on his ethnographic research with marginalized populations in Hartford, Connecticut, particularly focusing on people experiencing overlapping epidemics of HIV, substance use, and violence. His work was conducted in association with the Hispanic Health Council, where he served as a researcher. The Hartford studies demonstrated how poverty, structural violence, and social inequality amplified disease interactions.

Merrill Singer is a medical anthropologist who has been a central figure in the subfield of critical medical anthropology, which examines how political, economic, and social structures shape health outcomes.
