Before that, he was minister for EU affairs and chief negotiator in 2013 and 2014. He also served as president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 2010 to 2012, the first Turkish parliamentarian to hold that office, and represented Antalya in the Turkish parliament.
