Michael Polanyi was a Hungarian-British polymath who began his career as a physical chemist before becoming a highly influential philosopher of science. In chemistry, he made significant contributions to reaction kinetics, independently co-developing the transition state theory alongside Henry Eyring. He also conducted early work in X-ray diffraction and proposed theories of adsorption. Later in life, Polanyi shifted his focus to philosophy, where he is best known for his concept of tacit knowledge and critiques of positivism.
