Max Julius Friedrich Vasmer (1886–1962), known in Russian as Mikhail Vasmer, was a linguist and Slavist born in Saint Petersburg who pursued his academic career in Germany. His Russisches etymologisches Wörterbuch, published in three volumes between 1953 and 1958, systematically traces the origins of Russian vocabulary and remains a standard reference in Slavic linguistics. Vasmer taught at the University of Berlin and was a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. A Russian translation of his dictionary was later edited by Oleg Trubachyov.
