Mikhail Vrubel

Mikhail Vrubel was a prominent Russian painter known for his distinctive, slightly unsettling art style that bridged the gap between Russian Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Active during the late 19th century, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the Russian Empire.

He is best known for his iconic 1890 oil painting titled The Demon Seated, which depicts a melancholic, muscular angel with glowing eyes set against a mountainous background. He produced several variations of this demon theme based on the epic poem by Mikhail Lermontov.

Yes, Vrubel was also highly skilled in theatrical decorative work and ceramics. He was commissioned by Savva Mamontov to create monumental mosaic panels and stage curtains for the Abramtsevo Estate and private operas.

Towards the end of his life, Vrubel suffered from severe mental illness, including a diagnosis of tertiary syphilis, which caused him to lose his eyesight completely. He spent the final years of his life in mental hospitals, passing away in Saint Petersburg in 1910.
