description Moaning Cavern Overview

Moaning Cavern is a limestone cave in Calaveras County, California, within the Gold Country region of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The cave includes a large vertical entrance shaft and a substantial underground chamber formed by karst processes, in which groundwater dissolves soluble rock. The site has been developed as a show cave, with visitors entering through the shaft and viewing formations and other geological features below ground.
