Moinho de Maré de Corroios

This historic tide mill is located in the municipality of Seixal, Portugal. It sits on the Tagus River estuary just south of Lisbon and is classified as a property of public interest.

The original construction of the mill was ordered in 1403 by Nuno Álvares Pereira. He was a highly regarded Portuguese general and nobleman who famously secured Portugal's independence at the Battle of Aljubarrota.

A tidal mill uses the natural rise and fall of ocean tides to turn its heavy waterwheels. As the tide comes in, water flows through a sluice gate into a storage pond, and as the tide goes out, the escaping water turns the millstones to grind grain.

The mill was officially listed as a property of public interest in 1984 by the Portuguese government. While it no longer functions as a primary industrial facility, it has been restored and currently operates as an ecological and historical museum.
