The anime adaptation is produced by the renowned Japanese animation studio Shaft, under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo. The first season began in 2009 with *Bakemonogatari*, which quickly gained massive popularity for its unique visual direction. Shaft is famous for using avant-garde techniques, abstract backgrounds, and rapid text flashes.

The series is notorious for its complex release timeline, but the generally accepted viewing order follows the light novel chronological order. The series centers around Koyomi Araragi, a high school student who is a half-vampire following a brief encounter with the legendary vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. The series is based on a collection of light novels written by Japanese author Nisio Isin, featuring illustrations by Vofan. Nisio Isin is a highly prolific writer known for his wordplay and complex, dialogue-heavy storytelling. The novels were first published by Kodansha under their Kodansha Box imprint starting in 2006.
