Monster

A decision made in an operating room drives Monster, Naoki Urasawa's psychological thriller manga. Dr. Kenzo Tenma chooses his duty to save a life over the career interests of the hospital where he works. Years later, he confronts the disturbing consequences of that choice as a series of murders draws him toward a killer connected to the patient he saved.

Set largely in Germany, including the unsettled period after reunification, the story follows Tenma's search for answers and for the killer's twin sister. Murders of middle-aged, childless couples form part of the mystery, while questions about motive remain central even when the killer's identity is known. Its medical premise develops into an examination of responsibility and the value of human life. Monster suits readers interested in sustained suspense and moral conflict, with character histories carrying as much weight as the investigation itself.
