Moon and Stars

The Moon and Stars watermelon has a dark green rind covered with yellow spots of varying sizes: large blotches resembling moons and smaller speckles resembling stars. The same distinctive mottling can also appear on the plant's leaves and even on the stems. The spotting is a genetic trait passed down through this heirloom line rather than a disease or environmental response.

The Moon and Stars variety had largely disappeared from commercial seed catalogs by the mid-twentieth century before being recovered through the efforts of heirloom seed preservationists, particularly through the Seed Savers Exchange network. Kent Whealy, co-founder of Seed Savers Exchange, played a key role in locating and distributing the seed after a member reported having a sample. The variety's rediscovery in the 1980s helped spark broader interest in heirloom watermelon conservation.

Moon and Stars is documented in early twentieth-century American seed catalogs, with some references tracing the lineage to the late 1800s. It was once sold by mainstream seed companies before falling out of favor as commercial agriculture shifted toward uniform, shipping-friendly hybrids. The cultivar is now maintained primarily by heirloom seed organizations, specialty growers, and home gardeners.

Growers generally describe Moon and Stars as producing sweet, rich-flavored flesh that can rival or exceed the sugar content of modern hybrid watermelons. The fruit tends to be large and can weigh upward of twenty pounds, with red or pink flesh depending on the specific line. Unlike many commercial hybrids bred primarily for shipping durability and uniform appearance, Moon and Stars was selected for flavor and garden performance.
