Morbid Angel - Covenant

Covenant was released on Giant Records, a division of Warner Music Group, making it one of the first death metal albums to be issued through a major label. This was a landmark moment for the genre, as it signaled a brief period when major labels showed commercial interest in extreme metal. The album was also distributed through Earache Records in certain territories, Morbid Angel's longtime label.

Covenant was released in 1993 as Morbid Angel's third studio album, following Altars of Madness (1989) and Blessed Are the Sick (1991). The album appeared at the peak of the early 1990s death metal explosion and is widely regarded as a defining release of the genre. It cemented the Florida band's status alongside peers like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse.

'Rapture' and 'God of Emptiness' are the most widely recognized tracks from Covenant, with the latter gaining additional exposure through a music video that received airplay on Headbangers Ball. 'God of Emptiness' is notable for its slow, doom-laden riffing and deep, spoken-word vocal delivery by David Vincent. The album also features the intense 'Pain Divine' and the atmospheric 'Angel of Disease.'

The Covenant lineup featured Trey Azagthoth on guitar, David Vincent on bass and vocals, and Pete Sandoval on drums, with Erik Rutan contributing additional guitar. This formation is considered one of the strongest in the band's history, balancing Azagthoth's chaotic guitar wizardry with Sandoval's extreme technical drumming. The same core group would also record the follow-up album Domination in 1995.
