Moscow 2042

Written by Soviet dissident Vladimir Voinovich and published in 1986, the novel imagines a future Russia set in the year 2042 where the Soviet Union still exists. In this dystopian future, the state has grotesquely merged the rigid dogmas of communism with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The story follows a dissident writer named Vitaly Karpetshev who boards a flight from Munich in 1982 and inexplicably travels through time to the 22nd century. His journey serves as a vehicle to explore the absurdities of the Soviet system, which he finds has devolved into an even more oppressive and ridiculous bureaucracy.

While intended as a dark satire rather than a literal prediction, many critics have noted its chilling parallels to modern Russian politics. Voinovich's depiction of a state blending religious conservatism with authoritarian rule is frequently cited in discussions about contemporary Russian geopolitical behavior.

Voinovich's work is often compared to George Orwell's 1984 for its critique of totalitarianism, but it is much closer in tone to the absurdist satire of Mikhail Bulgakov. Unlike the grim realism of Orwell, Moscow 2042 uses slapstick humor, grotesque imagery, and dark comedy to mock the Soviet bureaucratic apparatus.
