Moulin de Cénaret

The mill stands at Cénaret in the Lozère department of southern France, near the village of Saint-Chély-du-Tarn. It occupies a waterside setting in the Gorges du Tarn, where flowing water supplied the energy needed to run its machinery.

The Moulin de Cénaret was primarily a flour mill, turning locally grown grain into meal for nearby communities. Its surviving wheel, gearing, and millstones illustrate how rural Lozère used water power before electric machinery became common.

The principal attraction is the preserved milling mechanism, including the water-driven transmission and traditional grinding equipment. The installation demonstrates the mechanical sequence from moving water to rotating millstones.

It preserves a working-scale example of the technology that supported farming communities in 19th-century France. Unlike a reconstructed display, the mill remains tied to its original water source and rural setting in Lozère.
