Mulgrew Miller (1955-2013) was an American jazz pianist and composer recognized for his versatile style that incorporated elements of hard bop, post-bop, and modal jazz. He performed with several influential jazz groups, including Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Woody Shaw's quintet, Betty Carter's band, and Tony Williams' quintet during the 1980s and 1990s. Miller led his own group, Wingspan, starting in the late 1980s and released numerous albums as a leader while appearing on over 400 recordings as a sideman. From 2005 until his death, he served as Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University in New Jersey, where he mentored many emerging jazz musicians.
