Münnerstädter Altarpiece

description Münnerstädter Altarpiece Overview

The Münnerstadt Altarpiece is a late Gothic carved altarpiece created by Tilman Riemenschneider around 1490 to 1492 for the parish church at Münnerstadt in Germany. Its program included expressive limewood figures and narrative reliefs associated with Saint Mary Magdalene. Parts of the original ensemble were altered or dispersed, but the surviving sculpture demonstrates Riemenschneider's characteristic attention to facial expression, drapery, and unpainted wood surfaces.
