Musgravite

Musgravite is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, with only a handful of facet-quality stones known to exist globally. Its extreme scarcity makes it significantly more valuable than diamonds. The gemstone is so uncommon that many jewelers go their entire careers without ever seeing one.

Musgravite was first identified in the Musgrave Ranges of South Australia in 1967. Subsequent discoveries have been made in Madagascar, Greenland, and Antarctica, though these yield mostly microscopic crystals. Finding a crystal large enough to cut into a gemstone is an incredibly rare event.

Musgravite and Taaffeite belong to the same mineral family and look almost identical, usually requiring advanced X-ray diffraction testing to tell them apart. However, Musgravite has a slightly higher density and refractive index. They are both composed primarily of beryllium oxide and share a similar gray-green to purple color palette.

Because facet-grade Musgravite is nearly impossible to find, prices can reach up to $35,000 per carat depending on the color and clarity. The gem is strictly a collector's item rather than a stone used in commercial jewelry. Most transactions happen privately between elite mineral collectors.
