N132D

N132D is an oxygen-rich supernova remnant located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. This nearby galaxy is visible to the naked eye in the Southern Hemisphere. Its proximity makes N132D a highly valuable target for astronomical research.

The expanding debris of N132D contains heavily enhanced levels of oxygen and other heavy elements that were produced inside the massive progenitor star. When the star exploded as a supernova, it scattered these elements across space. Studying this remnant helps scientists understand how stars enrich the interstellar medium.

N132D is a very strong X-ray source, leading to extensive observations by space observatories like NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. More recently, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured highly detailed mid-infrared images of the remnant's filaments. These observations map the hot gas and complex structures of the explosion.

Astronomers estimate that the stellar explosion that created N132D occurred approximately 3,000 years ago. This makes it a relatively middle-aged supernova remnant in astronomical terms. The expanding shockwave from the blast is still hurtling through space at incredibly high velocities.
