help Namer APC FAQ
What tank is the Namer APC based on?
The Namer is based on the chassis concept of Israel's Merkava main battle tank family. That gives it much heavier protection than many lighter wheeled or tracked APCs.
Why is the Namer considered so heavily protected?
The Namer was designed for high-threat environments involving anti-tank weapons, mines, and urban combat. It uses heavy armor and, on some versions, can be fitted with active protection such as Trophy.
Does the Namer carry a large cannon like an IFV?
The standard Namer is an armored personnel carrier and is usually associated with machine guns or remote weapon stations rather than a full IFV cannon. Israel has also explored and displayed heavier-armed Namer variants with larger turrets.
How is the Namer different from the older M113 in Israeli service?
The M113 is a much older, lighter armored personnel carrier with far less protection. The Namer was developed to give Israeli infantry a heavily protected tracked carrier suited to modern anti-armor threats.
