Napoleon Chagnon

description Napoleon Chagnon Overview

Napoleon Chagnon was an American cultural anthropologist best known for long-term fieldwork among Yanomami communities in Venezuela. His 1968 ethnography Yanomamö: The Fierce People presented an influential account of social life, kinship, conflict, and political relations, and became widely used in anthropology courses. Chagnon's interpretations, including his emphasis on violence and evolutionary explanations of social behavior, were strongly contested by other anthropologists, missionaries, and advocates for the Yanomami.
