help Nespresso FAQ

What is the difference between Nespresso Original and Vertuo lines?

The Original line uses a high-pressure 19-bar pump extraction system to make traditional espresso, utilizing dome-shaped capsules. The newer Vertuo line utilizes centrifusion (spinning) technology and barcode-reading lasers to brew larger cups of drip coffee alongside espresso.

Can I use third-party coffee pods in a Nespresso machine?

If you have an Original line machine, you can easily use affordable third-party aluminum or biodegradable pods from brands like Lavazza or Peet's. However, Vertuo machines use proprietary barcodes, meaning you are strictly restricted to official Nespresso capsules.

How do you descale a Nespresso machine?

You need to run a proprietary descaling solution (or citric acid) through the water tank and into a drip tray to clear out internal calcium buildup. Nespresso recommends doing this every three to six months, and the exact button sequence varies depending on your specific model.

Can a Nespresso machine make a regular cup of drip coffee?

Original line machines are strictly designed to pull 1.35-ounce espresso shots or 3.7-ounce lungos, though you can manually add hot water to dilute it into an Americano. If you want a standard 8-ounce cup of drip coffee, you must use a Vertuo machine.
