Compact mains such as the KH 120 only reach down to roughly the low 50 Hz range, so a sub extends the foundation for hearing kicks, 808s, and low-end rumble accurately. If you mix bass-heavy genres or work in post, that extension matters; for spoken word or sparse acoustic material, the mains alone may suffice.

It is designed for bass management, meaning a crossover routes low frequencies to the sub while relieving the satellite monitors of sub-bass duty, which also reduces their distortion. Within the Neumann KH ecosystem you can align levels and crossover behavior with the company's MA 1 monitor alignment software used across its current lineup.

Corner placement boosts output but usually worsens room-mode problems, so some experimentation between the monitors or along the front wall is wise. Because small rooms have strong standing waves, running system alignment and trusting calibrated measurements over your ears for the low crossover region is the recommended approach.

Small rooms are the hardest environment for subwoofers because modal resonances make bass sound different at every seating position. A sub with proper alignment can still be valuable for checking what your mix does below 50 Hz, but expect to spend time calibrating it rather than just plugging it in.
