Nicholas Nickleby

The film stars Charlie Hunnam in the title role, with Jamie Bell as Smike, Christopher Plummer as the villainous Uncle Ralph Nickleby, and Nathan Lane as the theatrical Vincent Crummles. The ensemble also includes Anne Hathaway, Alan Cumming, and Timothy Spall.

Writer-director Douglas McGrath condenses Dickens' sprawling, serialized novel—originally published in 1838–1839—into a roughly two-hour film, necessarily cutting many subplots and characters. The major arcs involving the cruel Uncle Ralph, the abusive Dotheboys Hall schoolmaster Wackford Squeers, and the Crummles theatrical troupe are preserved.

Christopher Plummer earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Ralph Nickleby. Critics generally praised the film's production design and ensemble cast chemistry, though its box office performance was modest.

The 2002 version is a streamlined cinematic adaptation running roughly 130 minutes, while the 1982 release was a filmed recording of the RSC's landmark nine-hour stage production directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The RSC version covers far more of Dickens' complete narrative across its extended running time.
