Adidas was founded much earlier, in 1949, by German shoemaker Adolf 'Adi' Dassler. Nike was established decades later, in 1964, initially operating under the name 'Blue Ribbon Sports' before officially becoming Nike, Inc. in 1971. Both companies have since grown into multi-billion dollar global sportswear empires.

The intense Dassler family feud actually created the Adidas vs Puma rivalry, not the Adidas vs Nike rivalry. Brothers Rudolf and Adi Dassler originally started a shoe company together, but had a massive falling out during World War II. Rudolf left to found Puma, while Adi created Adidas, splitting their hometown into two fiercely competitive factions.

Nike is famously associated with basketball legend Michael Jordan, whose 'Air Jordan' brand generates billions in annual revenue. Adidas heavily sponsors soccer icons like Lionel Messi and David Beckham. Securing top-tier endorsement deals with global superstars is the primary battleground for these two sportswear giants.

Nike consistently holds the position of the world's largest athletic footwear and apparel brand, generating significantly higher global revenue than Adidas. Adidas generally ranks as the second-largest sportswear manufacturer in the world. Nike's massive dominance in the lucrative North American market gives it a distinct financial edge.
