Nils Olav III

Nils Olav III is a King Penguin at Edinburgh Zoo who serves as the mascot and honorary Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian King's Guard. The tradition dates to 1961 when a penguin was first adopted as the regiment's mascot, and each successive penguin has inherited the name and title. The current Nils Olav III received his promotion to Brigadier in 2016 during a ceremony at Edinburgh Zoo.

The tradition began in 1961 when Lieutenant Nils Egelien of the Norwegian King's Guard visited the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and arranged for the regiment to adopt a penguin at Edinburgh Zoo. The first penguin mascot was named Nils Olav after King Olav V of Norway and Nils Egelien himself. Each successive penguin has inherited the name and rank, creating an unbroken line of mascots.

Each penguin to hold the name has been promoted progressively higher through the ranks over the decades. The original Nils Olav started as a lance corporal in 1972 and the line of penguins has advanced through the ranks with each ceremony.
