Nirupama Menon Rao is a retired Indian Foreign Service officer and diplomat. She served as Foreign Secretary of India from 2009 to 2011 and was the second woman to hold that office. Rao later served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2011 to 2013. Earlier diplomatic assignments included ambassadorial posts in China and Peru and a high-commissioner post in Sri Lanka.
Her career focused on India’s relations with major Asian and Western states.
