Norma Nilotica

description Norma Nilotica Overview

Norma Nilotica, Latin for 'nilometer,' was a constellation proposed by the British astronomer Alexander Jamieson in his 1822 star atlas, 'A Celestial Atlas,' placed on the western edge of Aquarius. It depicted a nilometer, the graduated gauge used in ancient Egypt to measure the annual flood of the Nile. Like many constellations invented in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it never won lasting acceptance and is now obsolete, excluded from the 88 constellations recognized today by the International Astronomical Union.
