The Novo Serus J is crafted by Novo Guitars, a boutique manufacturer based in Nashville, Tennessee, founded by luthier Dennis Fano. Fano is highly respected in the guitar-making world for his innovative takes on classic guitar designs. The Serus J is one of his signature offset models.

The Novo Serus J typically features Jazzmaster-style pickups, known for their wide, flat coil design that produces a bright, jangly tone with less hum than traditional single-coils. These pickups, combined with the guitar's offset mahogany body, give it a distinctive voice suited for indie rock and alternative genres. Novo often winds these pickups in-house to their specific specs.

The "relic" aesthetic, or "distressed" finish, involves intentionally aging the guitar to look and feel like a vintage instrument that has seen decades of use. Novo Guitars achieves this through careful techniques like checking the lacquer finish, rubbing away paint on the edges, and oxidizing the hardware. This gives the Serus J a broken-in, vintage vibe right out of the shop.

While it borrows the Jazzmaster's offset shape and pickups, the Novo Serus J features a mahogany body rather than the traditional alder, resulting in a warmer, slightly heavier tone.
