description Nozomi Overview
Nozomi, called Planet-B before launch, was Japan's first Mars probe, launched by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science in July 1998. A propellant shortage after launch forced a revised multi-year trajectory using lunar and Earth flybys, and later propulsion and electrical faults, attributed in part to solar-flare damage, left the spacecraft unable to brake into Mars orbit when it arrived in December 2003. Nozomi passed by Mars and remains in heliocentric orbit, ending the mission without achieving orbit.
