Octopus maya is a benthic octopus native to the continental shelf around the Yucatan Peninsula, including Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Commonly called the Mexican four-eyed octopus because of the dark markings beneath its eyes, it inhabits shallow coastal areas and feeds on crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling prey. The species supports an important regional fishery and is also studied and cultured in aquaculture research.
