Olympus PEN FV

description Olympus PEN FV Overview

The Olympus PEN FV is a compact digital rangefinder camera offering a classic shooting experience. It retains the renowned metering system and interchangeable lens mount of its larger predecessor, the FT. This lightweight camera is favored by photographers seeking manual control and a retro aesthetic, particularly those interested in street photography or detailed image capture. It provides an accessible entry point into Olympus’s legacy cameras.

help Olympus PEN FV FAQ

What film does the Olympus Pen FV use, and how many shots do I get per roll?

It's a half-frame 35mm camera, cutting each exposure to 18×24mm, so a standard 36-exposure roll yields roughly 72 frames. That economy is a big part of why Pen-series bodies are still shot today.

Can I use Pen FT and Pen F lenses on the FV?

Yes. The Pen F, Pen FT, and Pen FV all share the same Pen F bayonet mount, so period Zuiko glass like the 38mm f/1.8 or the compact 25mm f/2.8 mounts and meters mechanically without issue. This is one of the richest native half-frame lens systems ever made.

Does the Pen FV have a built-in light meter like the Pen FT?

No. When Olympus introduced the FV in 1967 it dropped the FT's through-the-lens CdS meter, so you need a handheld meter or the sunny-16 rule. Many shooters see that as a plus: no battery to die mid-roll.

Why do collectors pay a premium for the Pen F-series bodies?

They're the only half-frame SLRs ever produced, using a distinctive rotary metal shutter that permits flash sync at every speed. The FV's clean, meter-less finder and compact build make it the minimalist pick of the 1960s line.
