One-Eyed Jacks

One-Eyed Jacks holds a unique place in film history because it is the only movie ever directed by legendary actor Marlon Brando. Initially, Stanley Kubrick was attached to direct, but Brando ultimately took over the reins himself. The film's sprawling runtime and behind-the-scenes troubles make it a fascinating subject for film historians.

The movie follows Rio, played by Marlon Brando, and his partner Dad Longworth, played by Karl Malden, starting with a bank robbery in Mexico. After Dad double-crosses Rio and abandons him to the authorities, Rio escapes years later seeking violent revenge. The story is heavily inspired by Charles Neider's novel The Authentic Life of Hendry Jones.

Marlon Brando shot the majority of One-Eyed Jacks on location at the stunning Big Sur coastline in California. Specific scenes were filmed at the historic Rancho del Cielo in Monterey County. The production also utilized the famous Paramount Pictures western sets in Hollywood.

Despite its legendary status and Marlon Brando's performance, One-Eyed Jacks did not win any Academy Awards. It received only one nomination for Best Cinematography (Color) at the 34th Academy Awards. It ultimately lost to the cinematography of the film Fanny.
