help Open Water FAQ

Is Open Water really based on Tom and Eileen Lonergan?

The film was loosely inspired by Tom and Eileen Lonergan, American divers who were accidentally left behind near Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 1998. Daniel and Susan are fictional characters, so the movie does not claim to reconstruct the couple's final hours exactly.

Why does Open Water look more like real vacation footage than a typical shark movie?

Writer-director Chris Kentis shot the independent production digitally and used natural ocean locations rather than studio tanks. Its leads, Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis, performed in the water while real sharks were present under controlled conditions.

Does Open Water show the sharks clearly, or is the horror mostly psychological?

The sharks appear repeatedly, but the film concentrates on isolation, exhaustion and the couple's deteriorating relationship. Unlike Jaws, it has no monster-sized mechanical shark or action-driven rescue plot.

Are Open Water 2 and Open Water: Cage Dive direct continuations of Daniel and Susan's story?

No. Open Water 2: Adrift and Open Water 3: Cage Dive use new characters and separate accidents, with the Open Water name connecting them mainly through ocean-survival horror.
