Oreocereus celsianus

Oreocereus celsianus is commonly known as the 'Old Man of the Andes' because of its dense covering of white, hair-like spines that resemble an elderly man's beard. This distinctive appearance makes it a popular ornamental cactus among collectors.

Oreocereus celsianus is notably cold-tolerant for a cactus, reflecting its native high-altitude Andean habitat where nighttime temperatures can drop well below freezing. However, it still requires dry conditions during cold periods, as prolonged exposure to freezing moisture can cause rot.

The thick covering of white, hair-like spines serves as insulation, protecting the cactus from extreme temperature swings between hot days and freezing nights in its high-altitude Andean environment. The hairs also filter intense UV radiation at high elevations, preventing sun damage to the green tissue beneath.

In its native habitat in the Andes mountains of South America, Oreocereus celsianus can grow into a tall columnar cactus reaching several meters in height. In cultivation, growth is typically much slower and the plant remains significantly smaller, especially when grown in containers.
