Ouvrage Cap Martin

Ouvrage Cap Martin is located in the French town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, directly on the Mediterranean coast. It served as the southernmost coastal fortification of the entire Maginot Line.

The fortification was constructed between 1930 and 1933 as part of France's massive pre-WWII defensive initiative. It was built into the hillside overlooking the sea to defend against potential Italian naval and infantry incursions.

As part of the Alpine extension of the Maginot Line, the fort was actively garrisoned to defend the French Riviera against fascist Italy. It successfully engaged Italian forces during the brief Battle of the Alps in June 1940.

While the exterior blockhouses and artillery positions are still visible along the coastal walking paths, the interior subterranean galleries are generally closed to the public. The site is heavily fenced off due to its age and hazardous underground conditions.
