Pangaea – Miles Davis

Pangaea was recorded live during Miles Davis's 1975 tour of Japan and released by Columbia Records. The album captures Davis's electric period at its most atmospheric, groove-driven, and exploratory.

Pangaea represents the far end of Davis's electric period, featuring extended, ambient-influenced pieces with heavy use of electronic effects, funk basslines, and dense layers of percussion. The album bears almost no resemblance to his landmark 1950s acoustic recordings like Kind of Blue.

Both Pangaea and Agharta were recorded during the same 1975 Japanese tour and released by Columbia Records. Together they document the final active phase of Davis's electric period before his health-related hiatus from public performance in the late 1970s.

Pangaea features Miles Davis leading his mid-1970s electric ensemble, which included multiple guitarists, percussionists, and keyboardists. The large band created the dense, layered textures that characterize Davis's most experimental electric period recordings.
