Peace Race

The Peace Race was a multistage road cycling competition first held in 1948 and traditionally routed through Central and Eastern Europe, with stages commonly linking Warsaw, Prague, and East Berlin. It was one of the most prestigious annual sporting events in the socialist Eastern Bloc.

The name reflected post-World War II socialist political rhetoric emphasizing peace and international friendship among nations. The race was originally organized as a relay between Warsaw and Prague in 1948, and Berlin was added as a third anchor city in subsequent editions.

The race was primarily an amateur event, which meant that professional Western riders were generally excluded, but selected amateur teams from Western European countries did participate. Teams from socialist countries like Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union dominated the podiums.

After the end of the Cold War and the collapse of socialist governments in Central and Eastern Europe, the original multistage format declined. Commemorative and heritage editions of the Peace Race have been organized since the 2000s, but the event no longer holds the stature it had during the Cold War era.
