Penis Envy

Unlike earlier Crass releases where Steve Ignorant handled most vocals, *Penis Envy* specifically features Eve Libertine and Joy De Vivre on lead vocals. This was a deliberate choice by the band to center female perspectives in the male-dominated British punk scene of 1981.

The 1981 album is heavily focused on feminist themes, aggressively attacking traditional gender roles, marriage, and patriarchal structures. Its lyrics directly confront sexism and the societal expectations placed on women in early 80s Britain.

Steve Ignorant, a founding member of Crass, does not sing lead vocals on this specific record in order to maintain its focus on the female experience. However, he still contributed to the instrumentation alongside the rest of the anarcho-punk band.

Released in 1981, *Penis Envy* is the third studio album by the anarcho-punk band Crass. It followed their aggressively political releases *The Feeding of the 5000* and *Stations of the Crass*, cementing their reputation for radical DIY music.
