Perry Ellis was famous for his relaxed sportswear, use of natural fabrics, and a casual elegance that defined American fashion in the 1980s. Ellis fundamentally changed the direction of American menswear and womenswear by championing an unpretentious, lifestyle-driven aesthetic. His tragic death from AIDS-related complications in 1986 shocked the industry. Today, the Perry Ellis brand continues to operate, heavily inspired by his original vision of casual, colorful sportswear.
