Persona 3

For the vast majority of players, Persona 3 Reload (released in 2024 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC) is the definitive way to experience the story, offering modern graphics, quality-of-life improvements, and fully voiced social links that the original 2006 PS2 release lacked. The original Persona 3 is primarily of interest to series historians or those wanting to see the series' mechanical roots, as its combat, Tartarus exploration, and UI feel dated by modern standards. Reload faithfully reconstructs the same story and characters with a presentation comparable to Persona 5 Royal.

Persona 3 FES (2007/2008) added a playable epilogue chapter called The Answer, new Persona, and event scenes to the original release, but kept the same combat system where you only directly control the protagonist. Persona 3 Portable (2009/2010) introduced the option to play as a female protagonist with different social links and added direct control over all party members in combat—borrowed from Persona 4—but cut the 3D overworld in favor of a visual-novel-style point-and-click interface. Persona 3 Reload is based on the FES version of the story and does not include The Answer epilogue.

Persona 3 Portable is available digitally on PlayStation Store (for PS Vita and PSP backward compatibility), and it was also released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam in early 2023. The original Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES are only available on the PlayStation 3's PlayStation Store as PS2 Classics. Neither the original nor FES has been ported to modern platforms outside of the PS3 digital storefront.

Persona 3 is part of the broader Megami Tensei franchise developed by Atlus, and it was the game that transformed the Persona sub-series from a niche spin-off into a mainstream hit by introducing the calendar-based social-link system and daily-life simulation. The fusion mechanics, demon negotiation heritage, and elemental weakness exploitation all trace back to the original Megami Tensei games. Persona 3's success directly led to Persona 4, Persona 5, and the wider cultural phenomenon the series has become.
