description Philip Zimbardo Overview

Philip Zimbardo is an American social psychologist born in 1933, best known for his controversial 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment. The study, which randomly assigned college students to act as guards and prisoners, investigated how situational power dynamics and social roles influence human behavior. The experiment was halted prematurely due to severe ethical concerns and the distress of the participants. Zimbardo later founded the Heroic Imagination Project to teach individuals how to resist negative social pressures.
