Phyllodoce x intermedia

Phyllodoce x intermedia is a naturally occurring hybrid species of mountain heath found in North America. It is the result of cross-pollination between Phyllodoce empetriformis (pink mountain heath) and Phyllodoce glanduliflora (yellow mountain heath). It inherits traits from both parent plants, often displaying intermediate physical characteristics.

This hybrid heath thrives in high-altitude, alpine environments across western North America, including the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. It prefers rocky, acidic soils and well-drained slopes. Like its parent species, it is commonly found above the tree line in subalpine zones.

The flowers generally display a blend of the pink and yellow hues found in its parent species, often resulting in a pale pink or creamy yellow appearance. The bell-shaped, nodding flowers bloom in clusters at the end of the stems. The foliage consists of needle-like evergreen leaves typical of the Phyllodoce genus.

While challenging, it can be grown by alpine plant enthusiasts who can replicate its harsh native conditions. It requires excellent drainage, acidic soil, and protection from hot summer heat. It is rarely found in mainstream nurseries but may be available through specialty rock garden societies.
