Poèmes saturniens

"Poèmes saturniens" is the debut poetry collection by French poet Paul Verlaine, published in 1866. The volume introduced Verlaine's distinctively musical and melancholic verse style, which would prove foundational to the Symbolist literary movement that emerged in France in the following decades.

The title refers to Saturn, which in classical and medieval astrology was associated with the melancholic temperament, a mood of somber introspection and emotional gravity. "Saturnian poems" thus signals the collection's prevailing atmosphere of wistfulness, nostalgia, and deep feeling that runs throughout the verse.

The collection includes "Chanson d'automne" ("Autumn Song"), one of Verlaine's most famous and frequently anthologized poems, opening with the iconic line "Les sanglots longs des violons de l'automne." The volume also features poems organized into thematic sections exploring love, landscapes, and melancholic reflection.

Although published in 1866, before the Symbolist movement formally coalesced in the 1880s, the collection's emphasis on musicality, mood, and suggestion over direct statement strongly anticipates Symbolist aesthetics. Verlaine's later famous dictum "De la musique avant toute chose" (music before all else), from his 1874 poem "Art poétique," has its roots in the sensibility first established in this debut.
