Pokemon Red

Pokémon Red features version-exclusive creatures including Growlithe, Arcanine, Ekans, Arbok, Oddish, Gloom, Mankey, Primeape, Electabuzz, and Scyther. Trading with Pokémon Blue is required to complete the Pokédex and obtain all 151 Pokémon, a mechanic that drove the game's social link-cable culture.

MissingNo is encountered by watching the Old Man's catching demonstration in Viridian City, then flying to Cinnabar Island and surfing along the eastern coast. Encountering MissingNo can duplicate the item in your bag's sixth slot, but it can also corrupt saved data and Hall of Fame records.

For years it was believed Mew was obtainable only through official Nintendo events, but a legitimate in-game glitch was discovered involving a specific trainer on Route 24. This method requires no Game Genie or Gameshark and works on original Game Boy cartridges.

Pokémon Red and Blue were released in North America on September 28, 1998, over two years after the Japanese debut of Red and Green in February 1996. The games were developed by Game Freak under director Satoshi Tajiri and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy.
