description Poor Things Overview
Yorgos Lanthimos directs Poor Things as a surreal journey of discovery centered on Bella Baxter, played by Emma Stone. Brought back to life through an unorthodox scientist's intervention, Bella develops her understanding of the world through direct experience. Her story examines autonomy and sexuality, with social rules repeatedly questioned by a character who does not accept them simply because others do. The film's stylized settings and striking shifts in color give its world a deliberately artificial quality rather than the realism of a conventional period drama.
Dark comedy accompanies uncomfortable encounters, while the central performance traces Bella's changing language and independence. It suits viewers open to explicit material and unusual visual storytelling. Searchlight's film page introduces its premise and creative team.
help Poor Things FAQ
Who brings Bella Baxter back to life in Poor Things?
Bella is revived by the eccentric surgeon Godwin Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe. Emma Stone's character then leaves his household with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, played by Mark Ruffalo.
Is Poor Things based on a novel?
Yes, Tony McNamara's screenplay adapts Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel Poor Things. The film changes some elements, including reducing the book's emphasis on Glasgow and Scottish political identity.
Why does Poor Things switch from black-and-white to color?
The visual transition accompanies Bella's movement from Godwin's enclosed London world into a broader, more sensuous life. Director Yorgos Lanthimos and cinematographer Robbie Ryan use extreme lenses, elaborate sets, and vivid color to make that growth deliberately unreal.
Did Emma Stone win an Oscar for Poor Things?
Yes, Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film at the 2024 ceremony. Poor Things also won Oscars for production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling.
