Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo is located in the Troja district in the northern part of Prague, Czech Republic, situated along the banks of the Vltava River. It is accessible by public transportation, including bus lines from the Nádraží Holešovice metro station (Line C). The zoo has been at its current Troja location since it opened to the public in 1931.

Prague Zoo is internationally recognized for its Przewalski's horse reintroduction program, which has successfully returned captive-bred horses to reserves in Mongolia. The zoo has transported horses to the Gobi Desert over multiple shipments since the early 2000s. Przewalski's horse is the last surviving truly wild horse species, and Prague Zoo's efforts have been central to its recovery from the brink of extinction.

In August 2002, severe flooding of the Vltava River inundated the lower portions of Prague Zoo, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of animals. Tragically, a few animals including an elephant and a hippopotamus had to be euthanized when they could not be safely moved. The zoo underwent major reconstruction afterward, with many exhibits relocated to higher ground to prevent similar losses in the future.

Prague Zoo houses approximately 5,000 animals representing around 680 species. The zoo participates in over 100 European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) breeding efforts. Its collection includes significant groups of rare species such as the Komodo dragon, Galápagos tortoise, and western lowland gorilla.
