Prost-Senna rivalry

Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna were teammates at the McLaren Formula One team. Their partnership occurred during the late 1980s and early 1990s, specifically beginning in 1988. Driving the dominant McLaren-Honda, they engaged in fierce internal competition that led to multiple World Championships.

The most infamous collision occurred at the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The two cars tangled at the Casio Triangle chicane, ultimately resulting in Prost winning the championship after Senna was controversially disqualified. They had another famous crash at the exact same race the following year in 1990.

Alain Prost won four Formula One World Championships, while Ayrton Senna won three, combining for a total of seven titles. Their absolute dominance defined an entire era of global motorsport. Their rivalry is often cited as the greatest in the history of racing.

The intense rivalry largely ended following the tragic death of Ayrton Senna at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. Before his death, the two had begun to reconcile and show mutual respect for each other's talent. Prost served as a pallbearer at Senna's funeral in Brazil.
